The Other Oliver

August 19, 2010

tabby cat

This is the “other Oliver.” He lives with my best friend, with his Mom, his brother, an older male tabby named Angelo and a big dog named Jenny. He is nothing like my Oliver. He is mostly quiet, although he does talk occasionally, but he is actually saying something when he does. He likes laying in peoples laps and he likes running around with his brother. This is his brother (sorry the picture is blurry, but he was in constant motion.)

This is Mouse. He is a foot cat – he likes to lay on your feet or shoes. He likes to chew on shoes, too. It was quite nice to discover there was a warm fuzzy thing laying on my toes, keeping them warm. He also loves to chase and play with Angelo. Angelo was the only cat in the house for a long time and he used to just eat and sleep most of the time. Now, he runs around quite a lot with Mouse and it is very fun to see and very good exercise for a middle aged cat.

I still miss my Oliver and Bert while traveling in the U.S., but I had a lot of fun with these guys.

Cat: Genius or Idiot?

July 23, 2010

Here is Oliver’s latest feat of entertaining silliness. It is amazing what can be accomplished with a few balls and a laundry basket.

I started filming this because he was looking at the string on the side of the basket and clearly thinking about how to get it off or what to do with it. It quickly turned into a whole different game, however. Notice that it is not really about the balls. He can get to them when ever he wants. Once they are out of the basket they are no longer of interest. It is all about the basket. And, Bert just quietly looks on.

Oliver’s New Bad Habit

June 11, 2010

First, let me assert that I did not allow this to happen. I just grabbed the camera and took the pictures.

He isn’t doing this just because it’s cool. (Sorry, couldn’t resist.) He is in search of curry leaves which are usually kept in that drawer. And, if he can’t get to curry leaves, maybe the spinach in the container above would do.

I’ve had cats with unusual food preferences before. Oliver thinks cat food is okay. Cooked meat, not so interesting. Raw chicken seems to be high on his list, however, and fish, which he can’t have for medical reasons. But, the biggies are bread and green leafy vegetables. I discovered this when I gave him a broccoli leaf thinking he would play with it and he gobbled it down. If we give him a slice of bread he tosses it around like it’s a mouse. He chews on it, too, and it is soon spread all over the floor. Messiest toy, but entertaining to watch. It is even better if he can steal something (remnants of being a street cat), so I discovered chili peppers all over the floor recently.

He keeps us on our toes and entertained.

Making the Bed

May 9, 2010

We were trying to make the bed (after fixing the broken frame) and Oliver and Bert decided to “pitch in.” Here is the result.

Oliver, Cardboard and Climbing

May 3, 2010

Oliver loves to chew on cardboard. He also likes to get up on top of the kitchen cabinets. Once caught in the act and the camera is on, he puts on his innocent face.

Oliver has calmed down greatly (post-neutering). He still has a loud voice, but he isn’t constantly using it. He is much happier and so are we. He is getting back to his old self – playing fetch and running around after Bert. He still gets a bit wound up in the evenings when Bert wants to nap and Oliver is bored and wants to be entertained, but we are counting our blessings. Whew!

Cat Stretch

March 4, 2010

Posted by Kanga.

I posted this to YouTube a while back, but hadn’t posted it here, until now. This is a daily ritual. Oliver doesn’t like it much when DaddyBird tries to do this, so it is my specialty, apparently. He usually likes to stretch toward and touch door hinges, light switches and other things at his new eye level, but, of course, not when the camera is rolling.

DaddyBird goes to France

February 7, 2010

two cats in a suitcase As you can see, the cats are being very helpful getting DaddyBird packed. Where is he going you ask? To Monaco, where else? And, yes, Oliver, Bert and I are left behind, green with envy. Okay, I’m the only one who is envious. Oliver and Bert are just freaked out.

This is a business trip. DaddyBird is representing Shufflegazine at a trade conference. Hopefully, he will have a little time to get out and about and take a few pictures for us.

I haven’t quite finished posting the pictures from KL, so there may be a mishmash of posts in the next week or so.

Trip Prep

January 15, 2010

Bert and Oliver have been helpful as we have been preparing for our trip to Kuala Lumpur.
one pile of laundry and two catsFirst they help sort the laundry.
cat smelling moneyThen Oliver gave our Malaysian Ringgits a thorough examination – major sniffing fest.
cat rolling on moneyThen he proceeded to roll in the money. When he began to bite it and try to tear it to bits, I had to intervene.

So with all this help, we will be embarking on our trip Saturday morning. We will have a full week in Kuala Lumpur, eating, seeing the sites and maybe a little shopping. We will have internet at the hotel, so will keep you posted as we go.

I am already suffering from separation anxiety. A friend will be checking on our cats every day, but I still worry about them and just how well they will deal with it in the long run. We don’t need Oliver developing any new annoying habits.

New Tattoo

January 12, 2010

Apparently, Oliver thought I needed a new tattoo.

Actually, it was a somewhat amusing event. I was cleaning the bidet and this was of great curiosity to the cats. It is amazing how fascinated they are with sinks, showers and running water and how loathe they are to get wet. So, Oliver was standing on the toilet seat so that he could get a good view of what I was doing. This would have been fine, but the lid was up. I did something that startled him and made him back up. This resulted in some splashing and his foot ending up in the toilet water. This I found greatly amusing. He did not. I didn’t want him licking the blue toilet water off his foot, so I grabbed a hold of him and tried to position him so I could use the bidet to wash his foot. This is when the claw was sunk into my arm. I did manage to rinse his foot and he was greatly disgruntled about it all. And that is how I got that lovely puncture wound/bruise.
