DaddyBird’s Birthday Party

February 17, 2010

Posted by DaddyBird

Last night, to celebrate my birthday, we had a dinner at my favorite restaurant, Aroos Damascus, with a number of our Dubai friends, most of whom we have gotten to know through Twitter. We had a great turnout, including ourselves 30 people showed up over the course of the evening, and it was a really wonderful time. Aroos Damascus serves very delicious Syrian-style Arabic food, and has a large menu, so there’s plenty of choice. The staff there is always very helpful and kind. I like getting people to visit this restaurant with us, but it can be difficult coaxing some to our part of town since the traffic can be very heavy coming this direction in the evenings. So last night, it was a particular thrill to have so many of many favorite people together at one of my favorite places.

Aroos Damascus has a large outdoor seating area which is very popular, and always full in the evenings when the weather is nice. We managed to monopolize several tables for our large group. It was a lovely way to spend a birthday evening!

Here are a few pictures taken by our friends at the party:

Our friend Mahdi took this picture of me, along with (part of) Muhammed Ali, Wajiha and Money:

Micheline had several picture to contribute, capturing much of our group:

DSF Carnival

February 17, 2010

We are currently in the midst of the annual Dubai Shopping Festival. Last Saturday night, we were at a “tweet up” dinner at Al Mallah on Al Diyafah Street and this is the carnival (parade) that came by.

Yes, those are walking shopping bags and a drill team with shopping bags instead of pom-poms.

More New Year’s

January 8, 2010

partial lunar eclipseNew Year’s Eve was quite a night. There was a partial eclipse of the moon. We had a great time with friends. The fireworks were spendid.

Then, I went and got the flu. Rats! Anyway, I am feeling better, so will try to get caught up on posting what we’ve done and seen lately. In a week, we will be off to Kuala Lumpur for six days and I am sure that will involve new adventures to share.

Happy New Year!

January 1, 2010

After a lovely dinner with our lovely friends at our favorite fish shack, we walked down to the beach near the Burj Al Arab and watched the fireworks. It was quite an experience and I think we may have to make it a tradition. I didn’t realize how vocal the crowd was until I played the video. The display was spectacular. You will see the Burj Al Arab on the left half of the screen. The Atlantis Hotel is in the distance on the right side of the screen. There are floating lights that kinda look like UFOs. These were rudimentary hot air balloons that someone was sending up. All in all, it was a pretty fantabulous evening. (The people who paid to go to the party in the Burj Al Arab paid 7450AED/$2000US to see the same fireworks we saw for free. Suckers!)

It did not end there, however. We walked back to the fish shack and waited for the traffic to dissipate. Then joined the traffic flow ourselves, but because of the unique features of Dubai traffic flow, we had to travel a long distance in the wrong direction before we could turn and head back the way we needed to go. And, we weren’t just heading home. We met up again with some of our friends at a Moroccan cafe for tea. SO — it was 5:25 am before we arrived home and tucked into bed. I’m too old for this all nighter stuff!
