Manga Sushi

October 23, 2009

[Warning! Rachel, if you are reading this make sure you are sitting down and wearing flame retardant clothing. You might even want to have a fire extinguisher nearby. You might just burst into flame from pure envy.]

Manga Sushi

Manga Sushi

I stumbled upon an article in the online newspaper about a restaurant called Manga Sushi. We had to go check it out.

Dragon Ball Z was playing on the big screen behind the sushi chefs.

The Menu

The menu included manga (Japanese comics, for the uninitiated) on each page. They also had a collection of manga novels on shelves and invited customers to read.

Green Tea Milkshake

This is Daddybird’s green tea milkshake dessert. Yummy! (I had a sip just to make sure.)

Stuffed Pear dessert

Stuffed Pear dessert

This is my stuffed pear dessert – Asian pear with blue berries, raspberries and black berries with a scoop of strawberry ice cream. Yummy, also, and you can even eat the dish, sort of.

The sushi was very tasty, too, but I did not take a picture. I was too busy eating it. (It took us a while to find the restaurant, so it was past dinner time and I was hungry!)

The Best Part – they play what seems to be their theme song and all the staff, including the chefs stop to dance. See for yourself:

Special Ostadi

October 2, 2009

We had dinner at Special Ostadi again last night. If you want a glimpse at the inside of the restaurant, view the video from last June. https://livingthetravelchannel.wordpress.com/2009/06/18/special-ostadi/

We met up with some of our favorite friends – Uzma and Rami. Rami brought his friend Khaled, who was a “Special Ostadi virgin” according to Rami. Rami wanted to share the delight that is wonderful food and friendly service with his friend.

It is kinda like the television show Cheers in that we walk in, they recognize us, welcome us warmly, they know approximately how long it has been since our last visit, and you just can’t beat that.

It is a family owned and run business. The father runs the cash register and the sons serve as waiters, but not just your run of the mill waiters. They are comical and always make us happy to be there. Khaled (the waiter, not our dinner companion Khaled) was wearing his Michael Jackson tribute t-shirt and graced us with a little “Who’s Bad” choreography.

We had a blast. We tipped about 40%  and Paul had trouble convincing the father to keep the extra amount. We look forward to many, many meals at Special Ostadi.

The Green line of the Metro goes within a few blocks of the restaurant and it runs right by our apartment. I think this is an omen. I can’t wait for the line to open.

A Day in the Neighborhood

BKdeliveryThree Burger King delivery motorcycles – everyone delivers in Dubai.
AutomaticWe ate lunch at the Automatic Restaurant and Cafe. It was passable, but higher priced than our favorite restaurant, the bread wasn’t freshly baked and the food was average.
WindowWashYou may have a little trouble seeing what is going on in this picture. On the right there is a window washer. On the left there are several guys holding onto two ropes attached to the window washers platform holding it out away from the building. Clearly, the architect who designed this building did not think about how the windows were going to get washed.

Indian desserts

June 20, 2009

We met a new friend last night, Ambreen. An young Indian woman who was born here and lived here in Dubai all her life. After a full dinner at the Special Ostadi Iranian restaurant, she took us to the Bombay Chowpatty (pronounced more like cha-pah-dy) restaurant for our introduction to Indian desserts.

I couldn’t get the whole length of the restaurant in one picture. In the center (right side of the above picture) is the cashier. You pay there for what you want. You get a separate receipt for each item which you then take to the area at the left (entrees) or to the right (desserts and beverages). You can eat standing on the sidewalk or in the small seating area.
bombaychowpatty2Below is Garam Jalebi (on the plate – curly sugary things) and Garam Gulab Jamun (dough balls that taste very similar to waffles or pancakes).

faloodaThis is Falooda Ice Cream which is a scoop of ice cream on top of a pink sugary liquid (kinda like Nestle strawberry milk). It was the vermicelli noodles that I wasn’t too crazy about. I haven’t figured out the Asian desserts or drinks with gelatin or noodles in them. I’m just not crazy about drinking lumps.

falooda2After a full meal and three desserts we were about to burst.

More cheap food

veggiesTime to play the Price is Right! Come on down!

The six tomatoes above cost 4.10 AED total ($1.12, that’s $0.19 per tomato). The garlic cost 2.50 AED ($0.68). The asparagus was the expensive part of dinner at 7.95 AED ($2.17). That was last night’s dinner at home.

relishThis is the complimentary veggie appetizer that one gets at most Syrian restaurants. Lettuce, rocket leaves, lemons, cucumber, tomato, radish, carrots, bell peppers, chili peppers, olives, and pickles. It took us a while to learn to order less than we thought we wanted, especially the first time at a restaurant, because you often get complimentary things you didn’t order. Local Arabic restaurant entrees are often meat and rice, period. We prefer Syrian restaurants because you get veggies like this, which makes it easier on the digestive system, plus they taste great.

The last time we ate at this restaurant it was a rather unpleasant experience. I ordered grilled shrimp, not knowing that they would come with their heads and feet still on. I have a very hard time dealing with this. It creeps me out. Also, the shrimp kinda smelled like poo. We were sitting outside and a horde of persistent flies wanted my shrimp. Needless to say we sat inside this time and I did not order the shrimp. Why did we go back at all, you ask? Because everything other than the shrimp was good and they can’t be blamed for flies outdoors.

Most fun I have had in a long long time

March 8, 2009

Last Wednesday we went to a goodbye dinner party for Adrianna at her favorite restaurant, Special Ostadi (not to be confused with Ostadi Special, which is right next door). It is located in Bur Dubai (across the Creek from where we live). It didn’t take very long to drive there, but took a lot longer to find parking.

The restaurant is a “hole-in-the-wall” with real character. There are a wide variety of clocks, old cell phones, and baseball caps hanging on the wall. (The clocks don’t necessarily tell the correct time.) It was crowded and busy. We hadn’t even stepped in the door and joined our party when the waiter/owner saw Paul and said “Holly man!” Not sure if he was calling him “holy man” or “Harley man,” but once again, it’s the beard. When another of our friends arrived, an attractive young lady, the only open chairs were hard to get to and the waiter offered to carry her over everyone’s head to a chair. She was a little creeped out by that. It was late and I couldn’t eat much if I wanted to sleep, so I just had the 3 dirham soup ($0.80) and nibbled on the cucumber appetizers. After the meal comes unlimited free tea. He gave me quite a time about getting free tea when I hadn’t paid for food. (He didn’t know we are big tippers 😉 I nibbled on some of the meat others had and it was really yummy, so we will have to go back when I can manage a full meal. Additional friends kept showing up and it was a very fun evening. The teasing escalated when our Syrian/Russian friends (Rami & Sami) showed up. The waiter brought a plate to one of them, told him it was a special salad, when in reality it was the peelings from the appetizer vegetables. He brought out two small plates of dates. One had two dates — this was for four of us — the other plate was heaping with dates — it was for Adrianna only.

It was one of those evenings when your stomach muscles hurt the next day because of all the laughing.

Al Meshwar – Fujairah

March 2, 2009

To find a place to eat dinner after our bull butting disappointment and short visit to the beach we consulted the guide book. We picked Al Meshwar mainly because the guide book said “a bizarre building that looks like a cross between a set from the Flintstones and a crusader castle.” Darned if they weren’t right! — Great food, we highly recommend.
