For the person who has everything…

Yes, here’s the solution to that gift giving conundrum you’ve been struggling with – a horse lamp.

a life-size horse statue with a lamp coming out of it's head

We took this picture months ago. It was part of some shopping promotional. A completely coordinated living room was placed in the hallway of the mall.

What you can’t see in these pictures is that the horse is anatomically correct, including an anus. He’s not overly endowed – wouldn’t want to be tacky, after all.

Here’s another sight we didn’t expect in the Middle East.

She’s been here for a while. You can tell by the dusty bags under her eyes.

Hoses

June 27, 2010

When looking for a hose that we could use to wash off our balcony, we were amazed to find that it is nearly impossible to find a hose with connectors on the end. Hoses just have cut ends. You can buy a variety of “ends” to put on these hoses, but exactly how is the average shopper going to attach these to the hose in a water tight fashion?

Then, one day, came the revelation:

Technology at Its Best

June 26, 2010

So, we used to have a little cable port for our internet access. It was about 4 inches square. We’ve been “upgraded” to optical fiber line instead and this is what it looks like. (Thanks to Bert for providing a size comparison.)

indescribable mess

So, is it true that size matters?

Good marketing?

April 11, 2010

OMO detergent boxes with tag line "Dirt is good."I’m not sure how declaring that “dirt is good” is motivation to buy this brand. I thought dirt was bad and what you want the detergent to get rid of, but what do I know?

Palm Island

February 20, 2010

A few weeks ago we had the opportunity to go to a party at a villa on the Jumeirah Palm Island. Our friends Lara and Terry are on a one year adventure they are calling GranTourismo. They’ve combined their career as travel writers with HomeAway Holiday Rentals and are traveling around the world this year spending two weeks in each destination. Their first stop was in Dubai on the Palm, then to London, then to Marrakesh, then ???? If you like good pictures, good food, and good travel advice, you should follow their blog.

First let me say, our twitter friend Grace did a better job of documenting this party on her blog (than I am about to do). So, I recommend that you click here and read what she said and check out her pictures. Also, there is an entry by Terry detailing the food served and you can click here to read that. Extra points for those of you find us in the pictures on both the blogs.

Here are my pictures:

beachThis is the view toward the end of the fronds. It was atypically stormy. It didn’t actually rain, but was cool, cloudy and breezy.

cell tower disquised as a palm treeThere was a nearby cell phone tower disguised as a palm tree. Notice the fake dates hanging in the fake tree.

close up of fake palmIt was a beautiful evening with (in our opinion) perfect weather, good friends, and good food. We may never have another reason to go out onto the Palm, but at least we can say we’ve been there.

Location, Location, Location

December 5, 2009

The rule of thumb that the three most important things are “location, location, and location” doesn’t play out here. In America, businesses are rarely placed near their competitors. The thought is to be the only supplier of your goods or services in the area (unless you are Starbucks and the aim is to be on every  corner).

Here, businesses are clustered together with their competitors. I think it comes from the tradition of souks, such as the gold souk, spice  souk, or fish market, where all the suppliers of a particular product are together in one area. The picture below is just a few blocks from where we live. There are 10 rental car offices in the picture. There were more, but I couldn’t get them all in a single picture. 10 rental car offices on one street
