Last week we were in Dubai doing some shopping and errands. We visited Mirdif City Center Mall for the second time, ever. We saw banners indicating that there was a display of student sculptures somewhere in the mall (which is massive). Luckily, we found the sculpture display around the central information desk. The theme includes recycling and UAE symbols.

The Emirates Towers

Arabian Horse

We were particularly impressed with the falcon. The artist(s) even included the hood. Very creative.
If you are in the Mirdif City Centre Mall soon, look for the display. In order to vote, you must present mall store receipts for a minimum of 200 AED to the information desk.

After our furniture buying spree in August which resulted in closets and bookcases, one would think that the apartment is full and we should stop. However, we ventured out to buy two recliners. Here’s a few things we didn’t buy.

DaddyBird was impressed by this set. It’s a boy-thing. The closet doors are apparently gas pumps. A fully equipped military installation.

Tiger chairs! How Austin Powers is that?

And we got to see this bed in the flesh, so to speak.

We bought none of the above. Two boring brown recliners will arrive on Saturday. When they asked us where to deliver the chairs, it was kinda fun to go to the window and point to our building. It is rarely that easy.

Rocky Road Ice Cream – and there was the sound of angels singing…

Fudgee Bars, which come in “vanilla jolt,” “mocha rage,” “milky craze,” and “durian delight” flavors. The size and packaging led us to wonder if these were like Twinkies, but no, they are not that squishy or lacking in nutrition. Cupp Keyk takes brand misspelling to a new height. Kat Kat Tat doesn’t sound very appetizing to me.

Quaker seems to have thought of everything. Oats to put in your rice, because not just any ol’ oats will do.
Discoveries at other stores:

Pega-bunny jumps over the moon!

These kinds of things always stick out like sore thumbs to us. Apparently, no one is concerned about sexualized toilet plungers.

Meet our new kitchen table.

The table itself is not important. It’s just an Ikea table with drop leaf sides and a few drawers. The cats were disappointed to find the drawers too small for them to get into. No, the important thing here and the reason for this post is the table runner.

This was made by an Emirati woman as part of the Sougha program of the Khalifa Fund. Emirati women who are skilled in the traditional weaving craft used in creating bedouin tents have been encouraged to develop smaller products and keep the weaving tradition alive and well.

My first purchase was a carry bag just the right size for my iPad. We’ve made our purchases at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair the last two years. They sell at other events and festivals, so keep your eyes peeled for Sougha products.

It is almost Ramadan and time to stock up on the traditional drink, Tang, in family size.

I’m fairly certain that Disney is not aware that Americana is using Mickey to sell pastries.

Canned cheese (a long term tradition according to this shot from the Dubai Museum.)

Only in an OPEC country would you need to make this distinction. And, if you’ve never heard of ghee, it is a solid oil product, either animal or vegetable based, like shortening. Ghee is used in Indian foods.

As I mentioned in my last post, another expat remarked about Fujairah having only one supermarket (in the western definition of supermarket). We beg to differ. So, here are some highlights from one of our favorite stores.

This is the pasta aisle where I found shapes of pasta I’d never seen before. They have all the bases covered.

It appears that Foghorn Leghorn is selling chicken stock these days.

This is the spice aisle where you can get lovely bags of various spices.

I’ve never seen such a large pat of butter before. (Five kilograms – That’s eleven pounds!)

Frozen chicken hearts – don’t they look appetizing?

And the true test – Kinder Eggs!

And this is only the grocery section which is one fourth of the store. There’s also a housewares section and a second floor filled with clothes and shoes for the whole family.

There’s nothing quite like signs inside restroom stalls involving power tools.

Sea Urchin Lamp, that’s not it’s name, of course, but it is what it looks like.

Star Trek, The Next Generation chairs! The price is astronomical. 895AED/$244.00 on sale.

I found it interesting that the name of this product (and we all love Ikea product names, don’t we?) is more prominent than the picture of the product.

The joys of discount store shopping in Fujairah match those of doing it in Dubai. Here’s a few highlights from today’s adventure.

First, some quite realistic looking toy handguns and plastic rifles. I’m fairly sure that these have been eradicated from American store shelves.

Not far away are the Barbie wannabes. There were some brunettes in the bunch, but they were all fair of complexion.

This “one piece mug” apparently comes with two pieces – mug and spoon.

If you wondered where all those summer camp popsickle stick craft projects went, here they are.

Do these remind you of any well known detergent brand? Maybe it wouldn’t be so obvious if they weren’t displayed side by side.

Daiso is one of our favorite store chains. Not only can you find the obscure things you need, but there is always something humorous to discover.
Like men’s lipstick

I couldn’t pass up the Last Supper jigsaw puzzle.

Which came with a small package of glue and a little sponge, so that you can preserve your masterwork.

And detailed instructions: “Please 1 and confirm the number of peace in the beginning. They are 130 pieces of 13 pieces X 10 pieces in total. Attention: They are groups of parts of a small class. Please note keeping enough so as not to lose it. It becomes easy to unite if it unites it from the peace of the outside frame. As for the outside frame peace, one place or two places have flattened. Attention: Please note that there are a lot of assembly mistakes. Please do not set if forcibly when there is loosening or it is tight. It assembles it while dividing each color that looks like peace referring to the finished image chart of the package. Pasting method: Please paint without irregularity to bury the joint part under the surface of a completed jigsaw puzzle with the sponge of the attachment and crowd. The paste will dry in about an hour. (Different somewhat according to the season.) When peace is insufficient: Please search for surroundings well once now. Still, please paint out the beam and the lack peace part with the pen, etc., and sorry to trouble you, but, send back 50 yen stamp to an enclosed postcard when it is not found. Please note the report of correct peace and not coming excluding an enclosed postcard. After it sends it back, We will send the peace and the 50 yen stamp at once. (Become a response only of Japan.)
I was a little confused by the erasers labeled “Gatherable Type – Baby.” Was it some sort of exclamation — Gatherable type, Baby! – ?

Until I saw the Gatherable Type – Dad. It is a little concerning that Dad is making a fist.

Proof that you can find just about anything at Daiso – a frost scraper – in a land where it never gets anywhere near freezing. http://twitpic.com/4ezh2w [taken by DaddyBird]
