Bert Video

August 31, 2009

This is Big Eyed Bert whom we picked up on the street Friday evening. You can’t really see how skeletal he was, but you might get a glimpse of his razor back spine. We had hoped that Oliver would like a playmate but, you can see in the background is Oliver having a hissy fit. We have kept them separated ever since, mainly to give Bert a chance to put some meat on his bones and to give Oliver a break, too. It can’t be easy having an intruder in his home. Amazing that it took only two weeks for him to become spoiled and possessive.
Bert is doing well, eating voraciously, and even had some camel milk last night. He even showed some interest in playing with toys for the first time last night. He is constantly looking for a place to nurse, so it is clear that he was separated from his mother too early, long before we found him. If Oliver doesn’t warm up to him, we will have to find another home for Bert. But, first he needs to get to a healthy weight.

Oliver vid

August 16, 2009

Here are snippets of Oliver’s first evening with us. The noise in the background is the construction of a temporary litter box out of  the box that was shipped from the states (in the previous post). It may have rounded corners, but it can still be useful. We had to cut it down and tape it up a bit.

I think you’ll understand how Oliver charmed us into bringing him home when you see how social and talkative he is.

Abra ride video

June 2, 2009

As promised here is the video of the abra ride across Dubai Creek from Deira to Bur Dubai. The boat pulls out a short distance, then pulls back in again because the driver decided that he needed two more passengers. Once two more men got on, away we go.

New Toys

May 20, 2009

Here it is, finally. Sorry to make you wait, but the fancier my videos get (title screens, captions, etc.), the longer it takes to produce them. Hope it was worth the wait.

Naif, part two

May 11, 2009

I sneakily turn my camera on record and hold it nonchalantly in front of me as if I am just carrying it. It makes for blurry, bumpy and generally bad video, but it is the only way to capture the scene. This will give you everything but the smells (some good, some bad).

Miss Kitty says Hello!

April 27, 2009

Miss Kitty says “Hello” to everyone at home. If you listen carefully, you can hear her purr.

Raining – Oh when will it flood!?!

March 30, 2009

Raining hard again. Paul is out there somewhere stuck in traffic and I am here waiting. There’s a rumor of a tornado in Fujairah, but just an unsubstantiated (rapidly spreading) rumor.

Afternoon out with the Tweeters/Twitterers/Whatever

March 29, 2009

Just another ugly place in Dubai.
In case you are interested in the current state of the world’s tallest building, here it is as of Friday.
Here we are in all our glory. Yes, Donna, we are eating yet again. Notice the blur in the center of the picture. The waitstaff are really fast here.
Paul and Rami discussing Shufflegazine.
PK and Abha above, Rami and Kedar below.
We left this restaurant and headed across the street to a place where those who wanted it could smoke shisha.
Here’s a little snippet of conversation. Just a short panorama of our group (minus me, the benefit of being behind the camera!)
Paul smoking shisha. Sexy, huh!?!
Here’s Rami and Jamie just kicking back.

Documentary on Dubai

March 27, 2009

Here’s a short documentary on Dubai http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_RNoxO-5ms worth watching, aside from the hypocrisy of the four wheel drive club guy who worries about preserving the desert while he drives all over it in his gas guzzling SUV. Listen carefully to Hessa Lootah. She has some very important things to say.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque at night

March 26, 2009

This is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi. It is quite beautiful by day, but even more so at night because it is lit and the lighting changes from white to deep purple and back again.
For those who do not already know, Sheikh Zayed is considered the father of the United Arab Emirates. He was the Ruler of Abu Dhabi and the first president of the UAE when it was established in 1971. He died in 2004 and is buried in the courtyard of this mosque. From what I have read so far, he was a very wise man and good ruler. The same can be said of Sheikh Rashid, the ruler of Dubai when the UAE was established. The current rulers are the sons of these men and are proving to be wise, good rulers as well.
