Discount Shopping Gems

pig themed toothbrush holder, cup and soap dispenser

In a country where the word “pork” gets bleeped out of TV cooking shows, it is always surprising to see pig themed items. (9.95 Dhs is $2.70)

word board game named Scramble

Trademark is of no concern when you can misspell.

birthday 'candles' really flares

These birthday “candles” come with a warning that they throw off sparks. There’s nothing like having road flares on your cake.

Furniture Addiction

October 7, 2011

posted by Kanga.

After our furniture buying spree in August which resulted in closets and bookcases, one would think that the apartment is full and we should stop. However, we ventured out to buy two recliners. Here’s a few things we didn’t buy.

bed shaped like an army jeep

DaddyBird was impressed by this set. It’s a boy-thing. The closet doors are apparently gas pumps. A fully equipped military installation.

mod shaped chairs in tiger print

Tiger chairs! How Austin Powers is that?

ornate bed

And we got to see this bed in the flesh, so to speak.

ornate furniture

We bought none of the above. Two boring brown recliners will arrive on Saturday. When they asked us where to deliver the chairs, it was kinda fun to go to the window and point to our building. It is rarely that easy.

Grocery Store Discoveries

rocky road ice cream

Rocky Road Ice Cream – and there was the sound of angels singing…

various packaged snack foods

Fudgee Bars, which come in “vanilla jolt,” “mocha rage,” “milky craze,” and “durian delight” flavors. The size and packaging led us to wonder if these were like Twinkies, but no, they are not that squishy or lacking in nutrition. Cupp Keyk takes brand misspelling to a new height. Kat Kat Tat doesn’t sound very appetizing to me.

package of Quaker oats for rice

Quaker seems to have thought of everything. Oats to put in your rice, because not just any ol’ oats will do.

Discoveries at other stores:

plastic toy, bunny with wings

Pega-bunny jumps over the moon!

plungers with handles shaped like women

These kinds of things always stick out like sore thumbs to us. Apparently, no one is concerned about sexualized toilet plungers.

We Don’t Need No Stinkin’ Malls!

As I mentioned in my last post, another expat remarked about Fujairah having only one supermarket (in the western definition of supermarket). We beg to differ. So, here are some highlights from one of our favorite stores.

entrance of Safeer Market

This is the pasta aisle where I found shapes of pasta I’d never seen before. They have all the bases covered.

pasta aisle

It appears that Foghorn Leghorn is selling chicken stock these days.

boxes of chicken stock with a cartoon chicken on the label

This is the spice aisle where you can get lovely bags of various spices.

Spice Aisle

I’ve never seen such a large pat of butter before. (Five kilograms – That’s eleven pounds!)

five kilogram packages of butter

Frozen chicken hearts – don’t they look appetizing?

And the true test – Kinder Eggs!

carton of Kinder Eggs

And this is only the grocery section which is one fourth of the store. There’s also a housewares section and a second floor filled with clothes and shoes for the whole family.

Joys of Shopping

The joys of discount store shopping in Fujairah match those of doing it in Dubai. Here’s a few highlights from today’s adventure.

store shelf full of realistic hand guns

First, some quite realistic looking toy handguns and plastic rifles. I’m fairly sure that these have been eradicated from American store shelves.

store aisle full of Barbie doll imitations

Not far away are the Barbie wannabes. There were some brunettes in the bunch, but they were all fair of complexion.

coffee mug that includes a spoon

This “one piece mug” apparently comes with two pieces – mug and spoon.

baskets that look like they are made of popsickle sticks

If you wondered where all those summer camp popsickle stick craft projects went, here they are.

laundry detergent boxes resembling Tide

Do these remind you of any well known detergent brand? Maybe it wouldn’t be so obvious if they weren’t displayed side by side.
