Random things we saw today.
November 25, 2008These are just unrelated things we saw on our bus/taxi journey to the airport to rent a car. Below is the Rolex building and someone is washing the windows. Interestingly enough, you can actually see a difference. Everything is covered in dust here.
Below is a wooden yacht that is docked in The Creek. It is very beautiful. I don’t know if it is a private boat or if it is a business – tours or restaurant.
Below, notice the parka in the store window. For those chilly winter temperatures of 80-70F. Burrrrr.
Below is another shot of the big yellow thing they use in assembling the elevated train track. We still haven’t figured out how it is done. The sections are always complete, so they must assemble them on the ground and then hoist them up.
Before we left USA and people would warn us about the heat, I would say, “Hey, everything is air conditioned!” Here is proof. This is the machine for paying for your parking at the airport in its own little air conditioned box. Wouldn’t want you to die of heat prostration while you’re paying for parking.
Hope you enjoy the little things as much as we do.
I was so disgusted!! or disdusted!! I dusted not too long ago and already everything is covered!! This is not the Oregon coast! And the cold is colder! I think we do need the parka!
The little things are real life. We see the big stuff on the other travel channel š Did the huge fireworks reflect at your house? That is what I know of Dubai lately. Your stuff is more fun. Oh, parkas can be for when you jet to Switzerland. I love seeing common things. Tea? in a box or loose? Coffee? breakfast cereal, canned goods we wouldn’t think to eat. Thanks again for sharing. ~Linda
We need to get cold weather gear for our trip to Germany! I kind of hate to do get gear for such a short trip, but it’s quite literally freezing freezing there! (Hmmm, if one goes skiing at ‘Ski Dubai’ they can rent the gear… I wonder if…) Hopefully we can take a longer trip sometime in the future.
I do the grocery shopping; I’ll have to post some pictures of common sights. (If I can do so without being caught and suspected of commercial spying!!!
Loose, bagged AND instant tea in most grocery stores. And usually a wide selection. The Lipton Tea they sell here is much better than the astringent American version, but even cheap Indian brands or even better. Lovely to be someplace where really good tea is considered a necessity! The coffee section in most stores is almost entirely stocked with instant coffee, and again, a wide variety of brands. Apparently if one is well off enough to afford to brew coffee fresh- and so afford one of those fancy coffee makers AND the supply of filters to go with them- then it is more likely that they will go to one of the many roasting shops around, where they roast coffee beans, nuts and possibly even tobacco!
We looked for the fireworks and then apparently went to bed too early to see them! They were supposed to be going off around midnight, but actually went of much later than that! I imagine we would have at the very least seen the glow from it. They lit up fireworks all around the entire island all at once!
