Where Pearl Oysters Go To Be Eaten

January 28, 2012

Posted by Kanga.

Our visit to the Pearls Museum included persistent encouragement to have dinner at Akoya, the Japanese style restaurant also owned by RAK Pearls Holding LLC.

When the pearls are harvested, the remaining oyster meat is sent to the restaurant. In the past, when pearls were harvested by divers, the shells and meat were tossed overboard. Only the pearls were saved. The pearl farm is more environmentally conscientious and makes use of all parts of the oyster.

We started with a breaded skewer.

A lovely salad.

Udon soup.

oyster meat shaped like a paisley

They use only the muscular part of the oyster, not the whole oyster which is what I’m used to. This is much more appetizing and it is like eating little paisleys.

Just when you think they may have run out of ways to cook oysters – tempora.

Ending with dessert – red bean ice cream, sesame cookie, and apple slices.

There were several other dishes. We were stuffed before it was all said and done. We ordered set meals plus a couple of other dishes. If you go, stick with the set meal. It will be plenty, trust me. Everything was tasty and prices were reasonable. Highly recommended.

Kandora Shopping

man in front of a tailor shop

With the help of an Emirati friend, DaddyBird went kandora shopping.

First, a few measurements were taken and decisions were made on length and features.

Next, the fabric and colors were chosen. He ordered two black, one blue, and one white. After a bit of negotiation, a 50% deposit was paid. The total cost came to approximately $60.00 each.

When the finished product is ready, perhaps we’ll have a little fashion show.

What is wrong with this picture?

November 14, 2011

There are at least two things wrong in the picture below.

rectangular white plate with two pork cutlets, asparagus, baked potato, herb butter.

The two pork cutlets are the only things undeniably right. They were a good size and delicious. The herb butter was tasty, although I don’t put it on the pork, because I think that’s just over doing it. My only complaint about the asparagus would be that I can eat three times that much because I love asparagus.

The two glaringly wrong things, in case you haven’t deduced them yourself, are the rectangular plate and tiny, tiny baked potato. This meal was served in a pub, a supposedly British pub. That is not a pub plate. That is a foo foo fancy restaurant plate (and a foo foo food presentation as well). As for the potato, I would gladly have traded one of my cutlets for a decent sized potato, or three of those little ones. We are frequently at this restaurant, so I will have to remember this experience when ordering next time. It doesn’t really make sense, because meat is always more expensive than potatoes. It also doesn’t make sense to have such an artsy food presentation in a pub. Pub food should be a hearty plateful for the working man. Of course, being Dubai, this pub is in a hotel, so not exactly working man territory.

Student Sculptures

November 13, 2011

Last week we were in Dubai doing some shopping and errands. We visited Mirdif City Center Mall for the second time, ever. We saw banners indicating that there was a display of student sculptures somewhere in the mall (which is massive). Luckily, we found the sculpture display around the central information desk. The theme includes recycling and UAE symbols.

We were particularly impressed with the falcon. The artist(s) even included the hood. Very creative.

If you are in the Mirdif City Centre Mall soon, look for the display. In order to vote, you must present mall store receipts for a minimum of 200 AED to the information desk.

More Ridin’ the Green Line

September 19, 2011

Dos and don’ts of riding the Dubai metro.

Do read the screen carefully on the ticket machine or you’ll end up getting a day pass when you really just wanted to add money to your Nol card.

Don’t bother minding the gap, because there isn’t one.

Do go to the front car (if it isn’t too crowded) to get a good view of the track ahead and the satellite covered roof tops.

Ridin’ the Green Line

September 19, 2011

Saturday we headed into Dubai to ride the recently opened Green Line of the Metro train.

sign stating "the metro green line. connecting you through Dubai."

We got off briefly at the Salah Al Din station.

underground metro station

Not sure why the predominant color in a Green Line station would be red.

globe sculpture

This sculpture was interesting. It is a globe and coins of the countries are strategically placed.

entrance to the underground station

The Salah Al Din station is right below our old apartment. I used to dream of the day when I would be able to just walk down and catch a train to work, but that didn’t exactly work out.

alley way with large temporary pipes

Our old alley we walked through many a time still looks like crap. I had hoped that with the arrival of the metro station they would clean up and pave this alley. A lot of foot traffic happens here.

train platform

The platform where one boards the train. The glass doors provide safety against accidental or intentional collisions.

inside of the train

Here’s the inside, in case you were curious. Mostly standing room. If you get on at the end of the line, you can count on a seat, but they fill up quickly.

light fixtures that look like giant jelly fish

The Khalid Bin Al Waleed station has some striking light fixtures and some interesting historical photographs.

Didn’t Expect to See That Here

Christian fish symbol on the back of a car

We were a little surprised to see this yesterday morning. Car decals and decorations usually consist of patriotic symbols (flag, images of rulers) or writing in Arabic of which I could only speculate at the content or cartoon characters. I have yet to see an actual bumper sticker. They may be illegal or just non-existent in this culture.

I’m not sure if this symbol would be widely recognized. I suspect only Christians would recognize it. UAE readers, what do you think?

an empty desk

Yes, last day at former job completed. My desk has never been so clean. I’m a little sad to leave the people behind, but am very excited about the challenges and opportunities coming in the new job.

Now, packing in preparation for moving gets stepped up a notch.
