Didn’t Expect to See That Here

Christian fish symbol on the back of a car

We were a little surprised to see this yesterday morning. Car decals and decorations usually consist of patriotic symbols (flag, images of rulers) or writing in Arabic of which I could only speculate at the content or cartoon characters. I have yet to see an actual bumper sticker. They may be illegal or just non-existent in this culture.

I’m not sure if this symbol would be widely recognized. I suspect only Christians would recognize it. UAE readers, what do you think?

After how many years your eyes have opened to the fisher symbol?!?!?!

What does the fish symbol mean?

Ah, see, that’s exactly what I thought. The fish symbol was used by Christians in the first century along with the cross and other religious symbols. It was revived in recent decades and is probably the most used Christian symbol on cars in the States. There are several variations. The one pictured here is the basic fish. Sometimes it has the Greek letters that stand for Jesus Christ Son of God within the body of the fish or just the word Jesus. There was an evolutionist/atheist reaction that created a fish with Darwin in the body and added feet. For the Wikipedia lowdown http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_fish.

so it is sort of a secret symbol over there–over here, not so much. I only hope the Christians who put it on their car are not the type who flip off or irritate other drivers when something does not go their way.

Flipping off another driver can land you in jail. The only “safe” gesture to make is the one for “wait, please.” This gesture consists of turning your hand with palm up and touching all your fingertips together, sort of like a tulip. To us Americans, this gesture looks a bit questionable.

Irritating drivers are plentiful. One has to take defensive driving to a whole ‘nuther level here. One must be extremely patient while driving. Any road rage will not end well.
