band on stage

Mongolian Folk Rock Band is a string of words you may not have expected to encounter. I was intrigued, so made the sacrifice of staying up past my bedtime on a Friday night to hear Ajinai play. SO TOTALLY WORTH IT!

The music is wonderful. It is like Irish folk music meets Mongolian throat singing. The whole concert was enjoyable, song after song, but the encore topped it all. It was a rollicking number and the young Mongolians in the audience began to dance. It was a bit like the “dance off” one sees in the movies. Amazing.

I am already fascinated by Mongolia and hope to travel there within the next two years. This experience just strengthened my desire.

Johnny Rodgers Band on Cultural Exchange Tour

four member jazz band on stage

Last night we attended a free concert held at Fujairah Women’s College (Higher Colleges of Technology) and brought to us as a cultural exchange by the U.S. of A. Consulate General and His Highness Sheikh Rashid Bin Hamed Al Sharqi (ruler of Fujairah). Ambassadors for American jazz, the Johnny Rodgers band from New York kept the place rockin’ from beginning to end.

They performed selected examples of songs by great jazz legends – Louie Armstrong, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Jerry Lee Lewis. Even managed to squeeze Elvis in with Jail House Rock. However, Johnny was at his very best when singing his own composition, Mary Jean. Songs about old girlfriends are usually the most heartfelt.

I’m not sure how one is supposed to imitate Elvis with such a tiny guitar. He gave up and sang a song he wrote after visiting Graceland.

They sang to a full house and received a standing ovation. The band is very talented and it was an enjoyable evening, although it really is cruel to make music like that when people cannot get up and dance.

two Emirati brothers performing hip hop music

Last Saturday at the last day of the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature, we attended a session in which a local hip hop duo, Salim and Abdallah Dahman spoke about why they have chosen hip hop music and then performed a little for us.

You might remember their music from this little classic – DaddyBird’s Samsung Tab promotional video.

I’ll be blunt. I’ve never liked hip hop or rap music, but I like this. I am glad to support Desert Heat. (DaddyBird is too.) Besides, they are good boys who love and appreciate their momma. Can’t go wrong with that.
