Oliver was walking along the top of the headboard of the bed and apparently just fell off onto Daddybird’s face. In the process, he managed to give him the world’s tiniest black eye.
This picture doesn’t do it justice. It is a lovely shade of red. It’s not the only bruise Daddybird is sporting right now. He has two bright red spots from being shot playing paintball earlier in the week. Poor thing!

Daddybird, the influencer
November 5, 2009According to Steve Vaile on his Social Media Middle East blog, Daddybird is #10 of the 15 most influential Dubai Twitterers. [Although, if this blog (Living the Travel Channel) is a factor, I have to take some of the credit for that, since of the 300 posts so far, Daddybird has authored around 5. (I didn’t go back and do an exact count.)]
He tweets about tea, our cats, Kushti wrestling, T-shirts gone wrong, great food, bad phone service, and whatever else occurs to him. He meets people who say “hey, we’ve been tweeting about your cats!” He’s leading an expedition this Friday to the wrestling. He’s advising Wildpeeta on the fine tuning of their brownies and jam. He’s a mover and a shaker. When I meet people, they say “you don’t tweet much.” I just say, “I’m with Daddybird.”
If only he could influence Oliver, we’d have it made.

Wil Wheaton
July 23, 2009
Wil Wheaton (Ensign Wesley Crusher, USS Enterprise for those who don’t recognize the name) read some of his writings at the Stone Brewing World Bistro and Gardens. We went and did what fans do. Very enjoyable. Babybird was brave and went up to buy a book and have him sign it. She got the last one. Whew! He is very gracious and friendly. Like he says on his twitter profile “I’m just this guy, you know?”

Can’t wait
June 19, 2009Weather prediction for Dubai, June 23, 2009 = 105F. Weather prediction for London, June 23, 2009 = 73F.
Average temperature for Dubai in July = 103F with 65% humidity. Average temperature for Portland in July = 80F.
Average temperature for Dubai in August = 103F with 66% humidity. Average temperature for Wales in August = 68F.
Finally, those jackets and sweaters I saved will come in handy. I cannot wait to walk outside and be hit with a cool breeze instead of a hot blast.

Just a woman
June 9, 2009For the most part, I find that people interact with me normally and accord me basic respect. However, I have had two amazing instances of being invisible. The first was at a fast food restaurant in a mall. We were both there. I stated very clearly to the clerk what my order was, but she did nothing. Didn’t punch it in or acknowledge me in any way. Daddybird told her what he wanted and she hopped right on it. He came to my rescue and repeated my order to her. I guess I’m not allowed to eat unless my man says it’s okay. Her attitude changed when it was me who pulled out money and paid for the meal. Suddenly, I came into focus.
Yesterday’s experience was at a bank. We were attempting to open an account with a different bank because we don’t like the poor service we get from our current bank. However, can’t say we care much for the service at this new one either. The customer service person we were dealing with was male. He was not interested in my information in the least. Don’t bother him with information about my salary or employment. Forget about putting my name on the account, too. They have a real hard time understanding the concept of joint account here. Friends of ours who tried to explain that they wanted a joint account actually had the bank employee say “But, sir, she could run away and take all your money!” Is it any wonder the divorce rate is high here?
We’ll have to keep looking. Maybe there’s an American or European based bank that can supply an actual joint account.

Daddybird’s pride and joy
June 7, 2009
At the “tweetup” held by CentimeterCube, Daddybird proudly showed off his laptop to the amazement of all. They find the collection of stickers amusing, weird, unexplainable, and a myriad of other things. There are several layers of stickers on here. An archaeologist’s delight. Some unique and precious stickers have avoided being covered — like Delano & The Beauty. This realestate is in high demand.

More food
June 4, 2009Small clarification on the last food post. We had slightly more than tomatoes, garlic and asparagus, although it was a meatless dinner. There was pasta and spaghetti sauce involved along with some canned peas. All cooked by my sweetie.
This is tonight’s complimentary salad. It also came with complimentary lentil soup and flat bread. Daddybird’s entree involved a lamb’s ribcage and I had arayes, which is like two tortillas with a thin meat filling between then grilled to perfection.

I’m getting sneakier with my candid camera.

A note to the wise
May 29, 2009A note to the wise, don’t get hooked on chocolate shortbread cookies just before they become unavailable. We did this and now we are sad. Marks & Spencer, a British department store, has a small food section with a variety of cookies, chips (I think they call them crisps, not to be confused with fries which they call chips… wait, I’m confused), frozen foods, tea, preserves, etc. Anyway, the chocolate shortbread cookies have apparently been discontinued. Sigh. I am trying to drown my sorrows with blueberry and oat cookies, but it is just not the same. I may have to resort to baking my own chocolate shortbread cookies, but is it wise for an addict to be cooking things up at home?
