This is telling…

May 25, 2009

I met someone new today, so she asked the usual questions – How long have you been here? When she asked “Where is your home?” I immediately answered “Deira!” Then it dawned on me she meant where do I come from. Oops. So, there it is. Deira is officially my home.

We have less than a month before we get on a plane to head back to the states. Ever since we left the States, we’ve looked forward to being back and seeing friends and family again, telling tales of our adventures and catching up on what you all have been up to, but it has snuck up on us. It just seems too soon to be time to leave again. You should all come here!

This trip is problematic. I’ve been collecting a summer reading list, knowing that, at the rate I read, there won’t be enough time to read all those titles. I also don’t want to have to carry that much weight around. If I take too many books from here, where will I put all the books I buy at Powell’s Bookstore? The life of a librarian is hard. So many books, so little time. Audio books are looking better all the time. Hmmm… I wonder where my old public library card is…

Random remarks

May 22, 2009

So, Linda is critiquing my use of the word “mute” (see comment on previous post). Mute refers to inability to or choice not to speak rather than choice not to write. So, what is the right word? “Illiterate” doesn’t work because it implies the inability to read as well as write, and clearly that doesn’t apply. “Dysgraphia” doesn’t work ’cause that refers to difficulty/inability in writing skills.

How about “voyeurs?” Looking on, silently. I better quit before I offend you all and you stop looking on.

Glad you have all enjoyed, or at least been astonished by, the most recent toy episode. I think that Mickey is from an alternate storyline where he accidentally got into some PCP for a “Just Say No” anti-drug campaign. Why hasn’t Disney seen the merit in the “Mickey goes berserk” concept?

A street atlas of Dubai was just published. This was a major undertaking because Dubai is a city under construction. So, this atlas includes the finished and the unfinished. It is amazingly detailed. They have marked where there are stop lights, supermarkets, banks, ATMs, gas stations, cinemas, libraries, pharmacies (only the major ones), and more. Pretty exciting to us. I’m going to suggest to the college that the new employees arriving in August be given a copy.

The blog has been visited over 1,000 times since I switched to WordPress in April. Woo hoo! Now, if only it wasn’t being viewed by 1,000 mutes.

It’s official

April 11, 2009

We are now up and running here on WordPress and will no longer be adding to the Blogspot version of our blog. You’ll need to change any bookmarks you use to keep track of us. You could always click on the “Entries RSS” link in the right hand column and subscribe so that you will be notified everytime something new is posted.

I’ve gone through and cleaned up the category tags, so that every post has at least one tag and you can use the drop down category menu or the category cloud to click on topics to see all the posts about that topic. There is also a free form search box to help you find something you’re dying to go back and read again and again.

So far, I’m liking WordPress alot. Test out the comments function and let us know what you think of our new platform.

In all our glory

November 27, 2008

Here we are in all our glory. First not so bad picture, so I thought I share it with you all. And, just to prove that there are other people here, here are my East Indian coworkers P. and S.

Road Trip #2 – Abu Dhabi

October 11, 2008

So, here we are in downtown Abu Dhabi.
This shot shows part of a mosque in the foreground and a beautiful highrise in the background.
They do love glass and shiny things here.
I didn’t take this photo for the reflection in the glass, but it turned out kinda artsy fartsy. If I had been trying, I’m sure it wouldn’t have come out this good.
It is not uncommon, in fact it is very common, to see large billboards and murals depicting one sheikh or another. This is probably Sheikh Mohammed, ruler of Abu Dhabi and president of the UAE.
Here we are sitting on the steps of the Presidential Palace, which is not the Presidential residence, but an amazingly posh hotel.
Here’s what it looks like as you drive up.

They do love their fountains here. Water, water everywhere!

This is looking down from the steps. Notice the construciton in the background. It’s hard to find a view that doesn’t include construction and cranes.
More construction to the left.
There was a large greenscape all around the hotel. Very beautiful.
This is the view down the steps including the fountain flowing all the way down the steps. Water, water everywhere.
We came to the hotel to have high tea. It was very expensive, but yummy and fun. We each got a tray like this with three layers of plates filled with little sandwiches, pastries and desserts. I’ve decided that I really like clotted cream. Mmmm.
This is Daddybird enjoying a sandwich. I told him to look pretty and took a picture. Looked at it, then told him to look pretty with his eyes open. The golden glow to these pictures is probably due to the golden hue of everything there — the walls, the furniture, the lighting. It was very beautiful.
This is a shot upward at the top of the rotunda. Unfortunately, it is blurry. I failed to check the setting on the camera. But, hopefully, you can get a feel for the grandure.

Despite the grandness of it all, we both felt comfortable here. We didn’t feel like poor relations who had wandered in off the street. The acoustics were amazing, too. There was live music being played a short distance from where we were sitting and we could hear it just fine, but were unable to hear the people at the next table talking. We could also easily hear each other as we talked at our table.

Abu Dhabi is a beautiful city, but I don’t think I would take it over Dubai.
