This sign caught my eye. That orange tabby looks like quite the beast.

Exploring Fujairah: Part 2

August 30, 2011

Here are the signs we saw on our road trip.

road sign warning of camels

Surprisingly, we see more actual camels than these signs.

road sign with one red car and one black car

Hmm… red cars stay to the left? Red trucks, too?

speed bump warning sign

There are a wide variety of speed bump warning signs. There are also a wide variety (and plethora) of speed bumps.

And the opposite of humps –

sign on restroom stall door regarding furniture assembly services

There’s nothing quite like signs inside restroom stalls involving power tools.

hanging lamp that looks like a sea urchin

Sea Urchin Lamp, that’s not it’s name, of course, but it is what it looks like.

office chairs that look like they are wearing Star Trek uniforms

Star Trek, The Next Generation chairs! The price is astronomical. 895AED/$244.00 on sale.

sign in which the name of the item is more prominent than the picture

I found it interesting that the name of this product (and we all love Ikea product names, don’t we?) is more prominent than the picture of the product.

Diesel Tanker For Rent

July 9, 2011

Time for some signs, don’t you think?

tanker with "diesel tanker for rent" painted on it

Four all your diesel transport needs, you can rent a tanker.

freight container with a sign "caution nine feet six inches high"

I’m glad they warned me about this one. I’m afraid of heights.

Sky Sparkles Tiles Fixing

Some signs speak for themselves.

gate sign "stop for check up"

We stopped for our check up. (The building framed by the gateway is next to our apartment building which is obscured by the gate.)

tanker spelled tankar

And to go with your rented diesel tanker, here is a water tankar.

Let’s play a game.

grocery fruit section with sign for "kaka fruit"

Can you find the Kaka Fruit?

I think, by elimination, I narrowed it down to the persimmons.

(If you don’t see any humor in “kaka fruit,” allow me to explain that “kaka” in some countries is slang for poop.)

caution sign stating "labour at work"

This is just a little redundant, don’t you think? Labour laboring.

tenants are requested to park their vehicle in the slot that has been numbered according to their apartments, thank you management

It is not uncommon in “English as a second language land” to see signs that are anything but terse. This sign could use a good editor with a red pencil.

Christian fish symbol on the back of a car

We were a little surprised to see this yesterday morning. Car decals and decorations usually consist of patriotic symbols (flag, images of rulers) or writing in Arabic of which I could only speculate at the content or cartoon characters. I have yet to see an actual bumper sticker. They may be illegal or just non-existent in this culture.

I’m not sure if this symbol would be widely recognized. I suspect only Christians would recognize it. UAE readers, what do you think?
